Golden Globes: British stars Eddie Redmayne and Keira Knightley among actors nominated

Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are among the big names nominated for Golden Globes, ITV News' Ellie Pitt reports

The Golden Globe nominations are kicking off this year's award season, with Eddie Redmayne and Keira Knightley among the British hopefuls.

Redmayne came to our screens in Sky Atlantic's Day Of The Jackal, with Knightley taking Netflix by storm in the spy series Black Doves.

Redmayne's character - a notorious assassin - won him the nomination for best performance by a male actor in a TV series drama.

Knightley is nominated for best performance by an actress in a TV series drama, also for her role as an undercover assassin at the heart of British government.

This is not the first time the stars have been nominated: Knightley has been been up for an award four times, without a win.

Knightley is up against Emma D’Arcy, Kathy Bates, Maya Erskine, Anna Sawai, and Keri Russell for the gong.

In his category, Redmayne is up against Gary Oldman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Hiroyuki Sanada, Donald Glover, and Billy Bob Thornton.

Hugh Grant, Kate Winslet, and Daniel Craig are among other Brits nominated for awards.

Musicals lead the way in nominations, with Wicked and Emilia Perez landing multiple - the latter racking up a total of 10. Emilia Perez is about a Mexican drug lord who changes gender.

Ariana Grande is nominated for the first time. The star is up for best supporting actress in a motion picture, for her role as Glinda in Wicked.

Last year, the Golden Globes proved a successful night for Oppenheimer, which scored five major awards during the ceremony.

British film-maker Sir Christopher Nolan was named best director for the first time after six nominations, while Irish actor Cillian Murphy took home best actor in a drama for his work as the father of the atomic bomb.

The 82nd Golden Globes will take place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on January 5, hosted by Nikki Glaser – the first woman to solo host the awards.
