A man has died in a major fire in the Cumbrian town of Kirkby Lonsdale.

The man, aged in his 40s, died inside the property where the fire started, Cumbria Police said.

His body was recovered from the fire and he was pronounced dead at 6:30am this morning (8 December).

Another man is being treated in hospital for minor injuries.

Emergency services have been at the scene of the fire all day, and are being urged not to head into the town.

The local Christmas market, which was due to take place today, was also cancelled.

People living in the town are also asked to keep doors and windows closed.

Emergency services remain at the scene of the fire on Main Street, where apartments are believed to have been on fire.

The street remains closed.

Properties nearby have been evacuated and reception centres for those affected have been set up at the Methodist Church in Queen Square, and Lunesdale Hall.
